Kenji Bunch is an American composer and violist whose music crosses classical, folk, and popular traditions. Raised in Portland, Oregon, he studied at The Juilliard School, becoming its first student to receive dual degrees in viola and composition. His work has been performed on six continents and by more than seventy American orchestras. Bunch was a founding member of the Flux Quartet, Ne(x)tworks, and the Nurse Kaya String Quartet, and played with the bluegrass band Citigrass. After several decades in New York, he returned to Portland in 2013. He and pianist Monica Ohuchi direct Fear No Music, and he also directs the Metropolitan Youth Symphony’s MYSfits ensemble while teaching viola, composition, and music theory.
