Cello Competition

October 15th - 20th, 2024
New York City

Preliminary Round

Klavierhaus

790 11TH AVENUE, NEW YORK, NY 10019

Klavierhaus was founded in 1993 by Gabor and Sujatri Reisinger in New York City.

The brothers became known in professional circles for their high quality craftsmanship and their collaborative approach to creating instruments according to the individual needs of artists.

As a result, their efforts have earned international acclaim from world-class performers as well as students, teachers, and music aficionados across all genres.

For the last 30 years, many of the world’s most important pianists have worked with Klavierhaus and performed on their pianos.

The list includes Richard Goode, Sir Andras Schiff, Angela Hewitt, Garrick Ohlsson, Herbie Hancock, Simone Dinnerstein, Yuja Wang, Geri Allen,  Gyorgy Kurtag, Frank Kimbrough, Jeremy Denk and others.

Klavierhaus’ concert pianos have appeared on stage at venues such as Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, the White House, Library of Congress, Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and have been included in the Yale Collection of Musical Instruments.

Semi-Final Round

Greenfield Hall

Manhattan School of Music
130 Claremont Ave, New York, NY

With seating for 270, the intimate Gordon K. & Harriet Greenfield Hall is the School’s main space for chamber music, master classes, and lectures. The Hall’s Edwardian design features a distinctive stained-glass window, which allows for a high degree of natural lighting. The Hall’s integrated audio system makes it an ideal recording space.

The room was lovingly refurbished in 2002. The simplicity of the walls and French doors gives way to the much more ornate vaulted ceiling. This ceiling is extensively decorated with intricate cornice moldings, characterized by alternating corbels and rosettes. These motifs culminate on the balcony, where the arched doorways are capped with lintels featuring large corbels and lutes against a floral background.

Similarly, the face of the balcony is decorated by floral wreathes and pairs of crossed horns and panpipes. These features make Greenfield easily the most pastoral room at Manhattan School of Music.

Final Round

Neidorff-Karpati Hall

Manhattan School of Music
130 Claremont Ave, New York, NY

The School’s main concert hall (formerly Borden Auditorium),  has been newly renamed the Neidorff-Karpati Hall, to acknowledge Noémi K. and Michael Neidorff’s anchor gift to the project. The Hall recently underwent a complete renovation and is the contemporary translation of Manhattan School of Music’s flagship, Art Deco, 650-seat theater and the first modernization of the Hall in over 85 years.

The new hallmarks of the stage are a custom-built orchestra shell enclosure and demountable proscenium wall. These new features allow a full 100-plus-piece orchestra to be positioned on stage within a single acoustical enclosure for the first time in the Hall’s existence and include upgrades to the existing rigging, theatrical lighting, audio-visual, and flexible acoustical infrastructures.

Combined, these improvements better accommodate the variety of programs, offerings, and performances the School plans to host now and into the future.
