Andrew Imbrie (1921–2007) composed operas, symphonies, concertos and chamber and choral music. A student of Nadia Boulanger and Roger Sessions, he taught at UC Berkeley for more than four decades. His works include five string quartets and the opera Angle of Repose.

Andrew Imbrie (1921–2007) was an American composer closely associated with the University of California, Berkeley. Born in New York, he began piano lessons at four and studied composition with Nadia Boulanger as a teenager. At Princeton he worked with Roger Sessions, who remained an important mentor. After service in the Army Signal Corps, Imbrie continued his studies at Berkeley and received the Prix de Rome. He taught composition, theory and analysis at Berkeley from 1949 to 1991. His catalogue includes five string quartets, three symphonies, concertos, choral music and two operas. Angle of Repose, based on Wallace Stegner’s novel, was commissioned by San Francisco Opera for the American bicentennial.
