Sam Chung

Sam has been part of a numerous masterclass series including Jian Wang, Hans Jensen, Marti Roussi and Amaury Coeytaux. As a chamber musician, he has been part of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center Masterclass from the renowned Danish String Quartet, Erin Keefe and Misha Amory. Finalist at the Canadian Music Competition in 2015, first prize winner in Lillian Fuchs Competition, and 3 time winner at the Ruth Widder String Quartet Competition (19’, 21’, 23’), Sam has been enjoying his competition success in both solo and chamber fields.

An avid string quartet player Sam has been very proactive as a string quartet cellist. As part of the Elysian String Quartet, Sam has performed at the WQXR Radio station Midday Special concert, and the opening of the MET Museum’s Art Gallery Inaugural Concert. Also he was invited to the Heifetz International Music Festival: Ashkenasi/Kirshbaum Chamber Music Seminar in the summer of 2020. Most recently, he has joined the Dyllis String Quartet, and despite being a very fresh team, they were accepted into the 15th International Mozart Competition in Salzburg, participated in the Robert Mann String Quartet Institute at Manhattan School of Music and received personal guidance from Walter Küssner and Gregory Sigl in Berlin. During their time in Europe they had a chance to perform at the Solitaire hall of Mozarteum University and Kammermusik Salle at the Berlin Philharmonie.

A native from Vancouver Canada, Sam has received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from Manhattan School of Music under the tutelage of Philippe Muller and David Geber with a President’s Award Scholarship and graduated with a commencement award (Hugo Kortschak Award) for outstanding achievement in chamber music. Starting from this fall, Sam will return to MSM with a full scholarship for a Professional Performance Diploma under the tutelage of Qiang Tu and David Geber.
