Nicholas Hammel

Violinist Nicholas Hammel, known for his poetic phrasing and expressive depth, is currently pursuing his Doctorate in Violin Performance at the University of Texas at Austin under Sandy Yamamoto. He has also earned degrees from the Yale School of Music and the New England Conservatory, studying with Ani Kavafian and Don Weilerstein. He has soloed with orchestras such as the Richardson Symphony, Austin Civic Orchestra, and the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra. He also competed in the 2024 Joachim Violin Competition, and was a semi-finalist in the 2022 Young Texas Artists Music Competition, the 2022 Jefferson Symphony Young Artists Competition, and first prize winner in the 2022 Ann & Charles Eismann Young Artists Competition. Most recently, Nicholas won first prize in the 2025 Eastern Connecticut Symphony Instrumental Competition.

Nicholas is also an active chamber music performer, and has had the pleasure of collaborating with artists such as Robert McDonald, Marcy Rosen, Steven Tenenbom, Bion Tsang, Ara Gregorian, and Anton Nel, as well as members of the Miró and Juilliard String Quartets. He also is the violinist of Trio Sponte, a piano trio founded at the New England Conservatory in 2023. Together, they won the grand prize at the 2024 Coltman Chamber Music Competition.

Nicholas currently plays on a 2019 Felix Krafft violin.
