Hankyoung Chang

Hankyoung Chang, 18, born in South Korea, began studying the violin at the age of four. At eight, she entered the Pre-College Division of The Juilliard School, and in 2024, at the age of sixteen, she was accepted into Juilliard’s Bachelor of Music program. She currently studies with Midori Goto, Hyo Kang and Adele Anthony.

As the winner of the Juilliard School’s 2024 Walton Violin Concerto Competition, Hankyoung performed the concerto at Alice Tully Hall with the Juilliard Orchestra under the direction of Gemma New. She was also the winner of the Juilliard Pre-College Sibelius Violin Concerto Competition and performed the concerto in May 2022 with the Juilliard Pre-College Orchestra conducted by Adam Glaser. In January 2022, she appeared as soloist in the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto with the Gunsan Philharmonic Orchestra in Korea.

Hankyoung gave her U.S. solo recital debut at Juilliard and appeared as a special guest with Vadim Gluzman in Chicago. Her orchestral collaborations include performances with the Pazardjik Orchestra of Bulgaria, the Oltenia Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Banatul Timisoara Orchestra of Romania. In Korea, she presented a solo recital as part of the 2023 Hic et Nunc Young Virtuoso Series.

Her awards include the Arkady Fomin Scholarship (2018) and the Sejong Soloists Young Artist Merit Scholarship (2019–2025). In 2017, she became the youngest recipient of a violin loan from The Stradivari Society of Chicago.

She performs on a G.B. Guadagnini violin, Cremona, c1758 (“ex-Briggs”), and a Dominique Peccatte bow, Mirecourt, c1850, on loan from the Ryuji Ueno Foundation and Rare Violins In Consortium, Artists and Benefactors Collaborative.
