Sir Stephen Hough is a pianist, composer, and writer who won the 1983 Naumburg International Piano Competition. The first classical performer awarded a MacArthur Fellowship, he was knighted in 2022. His compositions span orchestral, choral, chamber, and keyboard music, and his books include Rough Ideas and Enough.
Five movements contrast organ-like grandeur with lighter inner pieces, including two tributes to Federico Mompou’s Canción y Danza tradition.
Sir Stephen Hough is a pianist, composer, and writer whose international career followed his first prize in the 1983 Naumburg International Piano Competition. He has performed with major orchestras and at festivals including Salzburg, Tanglewood, Verbier, and the BBC Proms. In 2001 he became the first classical performer to receive a MacArthur Fellowship. His honors also include the Royal Philharmonic Society Instrumentalist Award, a CBE, and a knighthood awarded in 2022. His compositions include orchestral, choral, chamber, keyboard, and organ music, with commissions from the Naumburg Foundation, Takács Quartet, and Wigmore Hall. Hough’s books include the essay collection Rough Ideas and the memoir Enough. He teaches at Juilliard and holds the International Chair of Piano Studies at the Royal Northern College of Music.
