The Jubal Trio, a unique ensemble of soprano, flute and harp, was the recipient of the 1977 Naumburg Chamber Music Award. Since its formation in the spring of 1974, the Trio was acclaimed for presenting unusual programs of original and varied repertoire. Their first album for Grenadilla Records included works by American composers, Jerome Jolles, Ursula Mamlok and Peter Schickele.
As part of its Naumburg prize, the Jubal Trio was awarded a commission by Joseph Schwantner, Wild Angels of the Open Hills, that received its world premiere on the Jubal Trio's Naumburg concert on February 2, 1978 in Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center. Wild Angels of the Open Hills, is a "cycle of five songs" with a setting of text by Ursula Le Guin.

"Wild Angels of the Open Hills, a commission by the Naumburg Foundation for the Jubal Trio, was composed between June and October of 1977, with much of the work completed at the MacDowell Colony that August. the scoring includes a multiple of instrumentation for each performer, a procedure consistent with other of my recent works which attempt to explore and expand the articulative, gestural and timbral possibilities of an ensemble. Besides the employment of the expanded instrumentation, the players are required at times to narrate, whistle, whisper and sing ..."
