George E. Lewis is an American composer, musicologist and trombonist whose work encompasses concert music, improvisation and interactive computer music. He is the Edwin H. Case Professor of American Music at Columbia University and artistic director of the International Contemporary Ensemble. A member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians since 1971, he has explored new relationships between performers, technology and musical communities. His book A Power Stronger Than Itself received an American Book Award, and he co-edited The Oxford Handbook of Critical Improvisation Studies with Benjamin Piekut. His honors include a MacArthur Fellowship, a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Doris Duke Artist Award.
