Nicholas Mann

Violinist Nicholas Mann combines an international career in chamber music with a longstanding commitment to teaching and the development of young artists. President of the Walter W. Naumburg Foundation, he holds the Robert Mann Chair in Violin and Chamber Music at Manhattan School of Music, where he chairs the Strings Department, and has served on the Juilliard faculty since 2002.

A founding member of the Mendelssohn String Quartet, Mann performed with the ensemble for 31 years throughout North America and Europe. The quartet expanded its repertoire through commissions from composers including Mario Davidovsky, Bernard Rands, Augusta Read Thomas, Shulamit Ran, and Tobias Picker, and recorded for Nonesuch, BIS, Musical Heritage, and Newport Classic.

His work as a soloist and recitalist has included Lincoln Center’s Great Performers series at Alice Tully Hall, Chamber Music at the 92nd Street Y, and appearances at the Santa Fe, Aspen, Ravinia, and Yellow Barn festivals. He also performed more than 100 duo concerts with his father, violinist Robert Mann.

Mann earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Juilliard as a student of Dorothy DeLay and made his New York recital debut at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1983. His teaching career has included appointments at Harvard University, the University of Delaware, the North Carolina School of the Arts, and the Hartt School.
