Mark Steinberg

Violinist Mark Steinberg is a founding member and first violinist of the Brentano String Quartet, combining an international chamber music career with solo performance and teaching. Founded in 1992, the quartet has received the Naumburg Chamber Music Award, the inaugural Cleveland Quartet Award, and the Royal Philharmonic Society’s award for its British debut. It is ensemble in residence at the Yale School of Music.

Steinberg has appeared as soloist with the Philharmonia Orchestra in London, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Auckland Philharmonia, and the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia. His work with pianist Mitsuko Uchida includes a complete cycle of Mozart’s violin sonatas at Wigmore Hall in 2001 and recordings of selected sonatas for Philips. He has also toured Europe and the United States as guest concertmaster of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra.

Alongside his quartet’s residency at Yale, Steinberg teaches at Juilliard and the CUNY Graduate Center. He has served on juries for the Banff, Wigmore Hall, and Salzburg Mozart quartet competitions and for Naumburg’s violin and chamber music competitions.

He earned his bachelor’s degree at Indiana University and his master’s degree at Juilliard. His principal teachers included Louise Behrend, Josef Gingold, and Robert Mann.
