James Kim 被 New York Concert Review 的 Harris Goldsmith 誉为“奇迹”，The New York Times 的 James Oestreich 则赞扬他拥有“令人钦佩的纯净音色与精准度”。他曾作为独奏者与 Boston Symphony、Royal Philharmonic 等乐团合作，与 David Zinman、Michael Sanderling、Alexander Shelley 和 Keith Lockhart 等指挥同台，在 Carnegie Stern Auditorium、Boston Symphony Hall、Jordan Hall 及 Metropolitan Museum of Art 演出。他曾在 Carnegie Weill Hall、Seoul Arts Center IBK Hall、Greene Space 和 Kumho Art Hall 举办独奏会。NPR 及 WQXR 广播电台曾播出他的演奏。
他曾与祖国韩国的众多管弦乐团合作，在 Lotte Concert Hall（他是该厅历史上的首位独奏者）、Tongyeong Concert Hall、Daegu Concert House、Seoul Arts Center 及 DITTO Festival 演出。2021年，Sony Classical 发行了他的专辑 Death and Offering，收录 Shinuh Lee 献给他的作品。
他获得过 Salon de Virtuosi 的 Sony Career Grant，并在 Isang Yun 及 David Popper International Cello Competitions 中获得优异奖项。2016至2021年间，他使用一把约1715年在威尼斯制作的 Matteo Goffriller 大提琴，由 Samsung Cultural Foundation 及位于伊利诺伊州芝加哥的 Stradivari Society® 慷慨借出。
